Rexton

The SsangYong Rexton is released in Korea in late 2001 and in Australia in April 2003. Only a few of these vehicles sold and marketing activities were on hold until in about March 2004 the 2nd Generation was released. The demand for this vehicle in Korea has been huge with the factory a couple of months behind in fulfilling confirmed orders. The Rexton is a stylish high quality 4WD Sports Utility Vehicle, which offers high standards of appointment, quiet on road performance, car-like handling, and yet rugged off-road capability. It can be configured to seat seven people all facing forwards, or as a five seater for more luggage space.

The  First generation Rexton was available in the two engine versions. The 2.9 litre five cylinder turbo diesel engine in the RX290, and the Mercedes-Benz licensed 3.2 litre six cylinder engine in the RX320. Both were available with a Tremec five-speed manual transmission or an Ion transmissions four-speed automatic.

For the Second generation (labelled the New Rexton) and sold since mid 2004, SsangYong replaced the 2.9 Diesel for a brand new 2,7 litres the five-cylinder 3rd generation Common rail Diesel, developed in conjunction with Mercedes and Chrysler.

Engine details:

RX320 162 kW/220 HP by 6100rpm
312Nm by 4600rpm
Mercedes-Benz licensed 3.2 litre six cylinder Petrol engine (Same engine as in the Mercedes E320)
RX290 88 kW/120 HP Mercedes-Benz licensed 2.9 litre five cylinder turbo diesel engine
RX 270 Xdi 121 kW by 400rpm
340Nm by 2400rpm
Brand new 2,7 litres the five-cylinder 3rd generation Common rail Diesel.
For the development of the engine, which is characterised particularly by its high torque, SsangYong invested approximately 142 million dollar. With this full torque the maximum of 345 Newtonmeters is already available with 1.800/min (to 3.250/min invariably).
This engine is developed with, and therefore simular to the one used in the Mercedes ML and the Jeep grand Cherokee.

Transmission:

  • Tremec five-speed manual transmission with dual mass flywheel OR
  • Mercedes-Benz 5-speed Tiptronic
  • Ion transmissions four-speed automatic (Replaced with the Tiptronic)
